Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) continues to play an increasingly important role in resolving commercial, construction and contractual disputes efficiently and effectively. Understanding the arbitration process from start to finish is essential.

The Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa) NPC invites you to join our interactive Moot Arbitration Workshop on Saturday, 17 October 2026. This practical in-person and online workshop is designed to provide delegates with a comprehensive, bird’s-eye view of an arbitration matter from commencement through to the issuing of an arbitral award.

Participants will witness the various stages of arbitration and gain valuable insight into the procedural and strategic considerations that arise throughout the process.

Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how arbitration works in practice and the key issues that regularly arise during proceedings, including:

  • The arbitration agreement and commencement of proceedings;
  • Formalities relating to an appointment of an arbitrator by the Association;
  • Essentials of the agenda for a preliminary arbitration meeting;
  • A preliminary arbitration meeting enactment;
  • A challenge to an arbitrator’s impartiality and independence;
  • A challenge to the jurisdiction of an arbitrator;
  • The exchange of pleadings;
  • A conducted evidence hearing; and
  • The arbitrator’s award and the decision-making process.

The workshop will be presented by an accomplished panel of legal and dispute resolution professionals:

  • Adv Tjaart van der Walt SC, Chairperson of the Association, senior advocate, international arbitrator and mediator;
  • Mrs Aimée Girdwood, commercial mediator, lawyer and strategic advisor with extensive international experience in governance, sustainability and complex commercial matters;
  • Adv Andrew Russell, dual-qualified legal and engineering professional specialising in construction law and dispute resolution;
  • Ms Sharné Losper, attorney, pupil advocate and ADR practitioner with experience across litigation,, construction law and contractual disputes.
